Miami Trace and WCH Girls Win D-2 Sectional Basketball Finals

Both Fayette County girls basketball teams grabbed sectional championships Saturday at Adena High School. Miami Trace overcame 29 turnovers to beat Waverly 50-36 and Washington CH used a big third quarter run to break open their game against higher seed Fairfield Union 58-47.

Miami Trace 50, Waverly 36

It took a hot shooting effort from the field and great defense by the (17-6) Lady Panthers to hold down Waverly for the Lady Panthers to win their Division 2 Sectional Championship. Miami Trace had to have both to overcome 29 turnovers.

FAC "Player of the Year" Shaylee McDonald scored 15 points to lead Miami Trace, while getting great support from Delaney Eakins 14 and Margarah Bloom's 9 points. Libby Alishire, Hilliary Jacobs and Gracey Ferguson each added 4 points to account for Miami Trace' offense.

The Lady Panthers shot 21/42 for 50% from the field- including 2/5 from behind the arc and 6/9 from the foul line. Waverly was held to only 26% shooting on 12/46- including 2/4 from the arc. They were also 8/14 from the foul line and had 18 turnovers.

Miami Trace is now scheduled to play top 10 ranked Sheridan at 6:15pm on Friday, February 21st at Southeastern High School in the district semifinals. That game will be broadcast on Buckeye Country 105.5FM and worldwide on iHeart Radio.

Washington CH 58, Fairfield Union 47

Leading only 25-24 at halftime, (12-10) Washington CH outscored the Lady Falcons 16-4 in the third quarter to open a lead they would never relinquish in upsetting the higher seeded MSL foe.

Halli Wall was one of three Lady Blue Lions in double figures, leading the way with 17 points. Shawna Conger had 15 and Jayleeya Tyree-Smith added 13. Katie Burke led Fairfield Union with 20.

WCH shot 20/46 from the field for 43%-including 5/11 from the arc, then added 13/21 at the foul line. They committed 14 turnovers. Fairfield Union shot 15/43 for 35%- including 3/13 from the arc and added 15/18 at the line. The Lady Falcons committed 19 miscues.

Washington CH now advances to the district semis at 8pm Friday against top 5 state ranked Warren. The Lady Warriors easily handled Hillsboro 50-17 in their D-2 Sectional Final at Logan, Saturday afternoon.
