The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is undertaking an effort to reopen a shuttered shooting range in Adams County.

The ODNR’s Division of Wildlife recently received approval from the State Controlling Board to invest $575,000 into the Tranquility Shooting Range, closed several years ago due to safety issues and increased erosion.

The approved funding will go toward updating the range with proper grading and drainage, and properly constructed backstops. The total cost for the project comes in at $2.3-million with 75-percent coming from grant funding through the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The other 25-percent would come from a state match of $575,000.

The ODNR is also moving to invest $325,000 into a shooting range in neighboring Brown County. The Indian Creek Pistol Range project aims to create a new, small-bore range on the Indian Creek Wildlife Area. That range would be primarily for handguns.

The total cost for that project is 1.3-million, 75-percent of which would come from a U.S. Fish & Wildlife grant with the other 25-percent coming from at state match of $325,000.
