Ellen Jane Hurtt, 92, of Clarksburg, a dedicated servant of God, died at 4:20am on Monday, January 8, 2018 at Traditions of Chillicothe. She was born on April 2, 1925 in Chillicothe, the daughter of the late Philip Marion and Ellen Stitt Dunlap, one of Ross County’s founding families. On July 29, 1944 she married Harold Hurtt who preceded her in death on September 30, 2003.
Jane was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived one daughter, Betsy Ellen (Larry) Moore of Chillicothe, four sons, Philip Morrow (Rolanda) Hurtt of Clarksburg, Harold Marion (Robin) Hurtt of Clarksburg, Richard Dunlap (Cynthia) Hurtt of Chillicothe, James David (Patricia) Hurtt of Clarksburg, twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Susan Brown of Clarksburg, and Ruth Will of McArthur.
Jane was a 1943 graduate of Unioto High School, attended Miami University and in 1972 earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Ohio University in Behavioral Science. She was a member of Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Clarksburg. She was active in church activities and traveled extensively with missions for the United Methodist Church. Jane was a member of the United Methodist Women where she served as a local, district and conference officer, she was a delegate for the United Methodist Women Biennium. She was a member of Cokesbury Publishing Board for the Methodist church and a President of Ross County Church Women United. She was a Sunday school teacher and youth leader for Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church and many kids went to the Lancaster Methodist campground with Jane’s help. Jane served as a delegate for the annual Conference at Lakeside for many years and was a member of the Ross County Agricultural Society Auxilliary for more than 60 years. Jane was a founding member of the Paint Valley Mental Health Board. She was a church community worker, an Adena Hospice volunteer, and spent 16 years as a Welcome Wagon Representative.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Thursday, January 11, 2018 in the Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Clarksburg and the family will be present at 10 am. Pastor Jerry Caddell will officiate. Burial will follow in Brown’s Chapel Cemetery. Friends may visit with the Hurtt family in the EBRIGHT FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday from 4pm to 8pm.
