Tuesday Morning Crash on I-71

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a traffic crash from early Tuesday morning involving three semi trucks.

According to Sheriff Vernon Stanforth, a Semi-truck operated by 55-year-old Dexter R. May, of Branchland, West Virginia was traveling south on Interstate 71, around 5 a.m., and traveled off the right side of the roadway striking another semi that was stationary in the emergency lane. The stationary semi truck was occupied by 27-year-old Dumitru Cotorobai of Miamisburg, Ohio. Following the first collision, May's semi over-corrected, traveling back across the Interstate 71 South lanes and into the median area where his vehicle overturned onto its side and began sliding across the Interstate 71 North lanes. It then collided with another semi truck operated by 47-year-old Jason Buffington of New Brighton, Pennsylvania, before coming to rest.

All three vehicles suffered extensive damage according to the report.  May was trapped inside his vehicle and extricated by members of the Jefferson Township Fire Department.  May was transported by Fayette County EMS to the Fayette County Memorial Hospital for medical treatment.  Cotorobai and Buffington reported no injuries in the crash.

Charges are pending as this crash remains under investigation.
