Ohio Seeing Worst Planting Season On Record

The US Department of Agriculture says 2019 is the worst plating season on record in the state of Ohio, because of the consistent heavy rain that kept farmers out of the fields in the early spring.

.

Joe Cornely, Director of Corporate Communications for the Ohio Farm Bureau, says about 18-percent of crops did not get planted this year, with the northwest part of the state seeing the worst planting rates this season.

.

In terms of acreage, that amounts to 1.5-million acres.

.

Cornely says the further south you go in Ohio, the better the planting got, but with plants going in later in the season, come lower yields come harvest time.

.

He adds that this is on top of the reduced demand for crops, specifically soybeans, with the ongoing trade dispute with china, and that country previously being the biggest overseas market for farmers.
