Columbus Woman Dead at the Scene of Fayette County Crash, Sunday

A Columbus woman's life was tragically cut short Sunday evening as the result of a single-vehicle crash along U.S. 62 in Fayette County.

According to Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth, Shyla R. Nichols, 39, of Columbus, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatal crash took place in the 12,000 block of U.S. 62 in Madison Township shortly before 11:00 p.m. Sunday.

Nichols had been southbound on the route in a 2008 Nissan Altima when she veered out of her lane and traveled across the center divide and into oncoming traffic. The vehicle continued off the left side of the roadway and into a ditch before striking a mailbox and a tree. The vehicle sustained heavy damage trapping Nichols inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Fayette County Coroner after being extracted by members of Tri-County Fire & Rescue.

Fayette County EMS and the Fayette County Sheriff's Rescue Unit also provided assistance at the scene of the crash, which remains under investigation by the sheriff's traffic crash reconstruction unit.
