Historian Speaks on Early Black History of Area

During Black History Month, a local historian spoke on that aspect of early Chillicothe.

-

Beverly Gray says her specialty is lost African-American history. She spoke Saturday at Adena Mansion and Gardens on what she has found, from the settling of the Northwest Territory to the Underground Railroad.

-

She says the early leaders of the area like the Worthington and Tiffins brought enslaved people with them from Virginia...but not slavery. She said the freed slaves then had to learn how to be free, and find places where they could settle and build communities.

-

She hopes to publish some of her rediscovered history next year.

-

Gray is co-founder of the David Nickens Heritage Center in Chillicothe, a museum of local black history. They will be among the institutions open on Statehood Day March 2nd...and will also have a conversation on current issues.

-

Kevin Coleman regularly reports on Chillicothe & Circleville councils and local culture
