Highway Department Seeks Taxes for Roads

The Ohio Department of Transportation says there isn't enough money in the budget for new road projects and needs additional revenue to avoid a crisis.

The Ohio house is studying the issue and raising the state's gasoline tax is one option. it's currently 28 cents per gallon but hasn't been raised since 2005. Pennsylvania's is 58.7 cents.

Ohio house speaker Larry Householder says many of those appointed to a committee by governor Mike Dewine who are calling for an increase are contractors, engineers and others who would benefit from it.

Householder says, "we are going to go to a finance committee in the house and we are going to hear testimony from a wide range of people from Ohio."

The state's two-year transportation budget must be in place by the end of March.
