The Fayette County Commissioners have passed a resolution opposing State Issue 1, claiming passage of the issue would have disastrous effects.
During the Commissioners meeting held October 8th, the Commission unanimously passed the resolution which stated that passage of the issue would bring an increase in substance abuse activity and criminal behavior, and an incurring of significant costs for court proceedings in re-sentencing or releasing those convicted of past offenses.
The Commissioners also fear a loss of county funding due to the misdemeanor classifications for possession of illegal drugs, and say passage of the issue would impose a substantial unfunded mandate on the county to pay for treatment services mandated by the issue’s provisions.
Voters will decide on Issue 1 on November 6th.
