Illinois Man Injured in Fayette County Crash


The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a one-vehicle injury traffic crash that occurred on Tuesday afternoon on U.S. #35 East near the US 22/62 Exit in Union Township, Fayette County.  The crash was reported at 12:05pm.


According to Sheriff Vernon Stanforth, a car operated by 65-year-old Jay D. Justice of Springfield, Illinois was traveling east on U.S. #35 and lost control after it is believed that Mr. Justice suffered from a medical issue.  The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway into the ditch and struck a storm drain and embankment before overturning and coming to rest. 


Justice was transported by Fayette County EMS to the Fayette County Memorial Hospital before being transported via medical helicopter to a Columbus area hospital for further treatment.  The vehicle sustained disabling damage in the crash and was towed from the scene. 


Members of the Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit were called to the scene and are investigating the crash.  Also assisting at the scene were members of the Washington Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Rescue Unit. Members of the Ohio Department of Transportation provided assistance in detouring traffic while the crash was being investigated.
