January is National Blood Donor Awareness Month and the American Red Cross is urging Ohioans to donate blood amid a winter shortage.
Officials note due to winter weather conditions more than 150 blood drives have been forced to close causing over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. Also, seasonal illnesses and holiday schedules have collectively contributed to more than 28,000 fewer donations.
