Athens 34, Miami Trace 23 

The Miami Trace Lady Panthers couldn't overcome one of their worst shooting nights and were defeated Thursday at the Ross Southeastern Division II district semi-finals.

Taking an early 5-4 lead over Athens, the Lady Bulldogs then went on a 13-4 run the remainder of the first half including holding Miami Trace scoreless for a total of seven minutes on two separate occasions.

Athens lead 9-8 after the first quarter then expanded the lead to 17-9 at the half holding the Lady Panthers to only an Adriana Mabra free throw in the second period. Josie Cobb had scored all of Miami Trace eight 1st quarter points.

In the third period Athens had only two field goals but added 13 free throws to pull away with the win. At the end of three quarters Miami Trace cut the deficit to 23-18 and then got to within three points on two occasions early in the final period (23-20 & 25-22) but couldn't draw any closer.

Miami Trace shot unofficially only 16% from the field and was 5 of 7 from the charity stripe. Cobb finished with 12 points, Abby Schwenk had 7 points, Kelsey Wilson added with 3 points and Mabra with 1 point.

Athens shot only 18% from the field but was 13 of 17 at the charity line (all in the 2nd half). Athens is now 24-1 and was led by Dominque Dosek with 18 points (13 in the 2nd half). Athens outrebounded Miami Trace 28-22 including 12 offensive rebounds.

The Panthers finish the season at 19-5 and 38-10 the last two seasons under Head Coach Ben Ackley and his staff.

Athens will play Jackson on Wednesday at 7pm in the District finals. Jackson defeated Sheridan earlier in the evening. Jackson is the only team to defeat Athens during the regular season winning at Jackson 57-51 on February 1st.

With the Miami Trace loss there are only two SCOL girls teams left in tournament play.

Clinton Massie will play Bellbrook Saturday at 12 Noon in the Lebanon sectional finals and on Monday Greenfield McClain plays against Crooksville at Waverly in a sectional final. Both games will air on Buckeye Country 105.5FM and iheartradio.
