Hillsboro’s Kordell Ford came up shy of a state wrestling championship Saturday. Wrestling in the 160 pound class of Division II, Ford fell 9-8 in the championship match.

Miami Trace’s Russell Miller scored a fourth place finish in the 170 pound class.

Hillsboro’s Ryan Kelly placed 6th in 120 and Chillicothe’s Caleb Price earned an 8th place finish at 138 pounds.


Greenfield McClain 57, Wellston 31 

The Greenfield McClain Lady Tigers used two big runs at the start and end of the first half to capture a Waverly Division 3 District title Saturday evening.

The win puts the Tigers in the Sweet 16 at Logan on Wednesday night.

McClain started the game with a 12-0 run before Wellston got their first bucket of the game. McClain led 12-5 at the end of the first quarter. Wellston started to cut down the deficit pulling to within four points--19-15 with a few minutes left in the 2nd quarter when the Lady Tigers went on a 13-0 run to end the first half and giving the Lady Tigers a 32-15 halftime lead.

Shania Massie followed up her 30 point performance against Crooksville on Monday night in the district semi-final with a 24 points performance in the district finals. Taylor Polley had 11 points and Katy Unger added 10 points.

McClain shot 35.2% from the field including 6 of 12 on three point shots. They were 16 of 21 from the free throw line and outrebounded Wellston 32-23 including 9 offensive rebounds. McClain had 14 turnovers but only 3 in the second half.

Wellston was 10 of 44 from the field for 22.7% including 4 of 14 on three point shots. They were 7 of 15 at the charity stripe. They had 19 turnovers.

Wellston was led by Lexi Hopkins with 12 points Lexi Humphries who averaging about 15 points a game was held to 7 points.

McClain (15-7) will play Proctorville Fairland Wednesday night at 8pm in the Logan regional semi-final. The game will be broadcast on Buckeye Country 105.5FM and iheartradio.
