TENNIS:

Chillicothe 3, Hillsboro 2

During our preview for Boys the Cavs’ Boys Tennis team, we pointed out there were two girls (Emma Patino and Gabby Lapurga) on the team. Thursday, the boys were happy to have them in Cavalier Blue & White.

Chillicothe defeated Hillsboro 3-2 in what came down to the 2nd Doubles match.

“Three courts went to 3 sets and we only won 1 of them” said Coach Janet Disbennett. “We had our chances and were close in those 2 matches.”

Tied a 2-2, the deciding match featured Patino and Lapurga who won their first set 7-5, but Hillsboro’s Maverick Ward and Chase Colliver took the second set 6-7. Patino and Lapurga captured the third set 6-4 to net the win for the Cavs.

“They played as it was getting dark” said Disbennett. “Emma and Gabby played tough and pulled it out for the win.”

Will Kreiger lost his 2nd Singles match in three sets as did the 1st Doubles team of Noah Wright-Piekarski and Jacob Hirsch.

Nick Whalen and Ryan Littler won their Singles matches as the Cavs improved to 3-1 in the SCOL and evened their overall mark at 3-3.

Chillicothe travels to Miami Trace Monday.

SOFTBALL:

Hillsboro 5, Adena 1

Chillicothe 9, Clinton Massie 7

Clinton Massie got to Chillicothe starter Olivia Ray early for a 4-0 lead in its first at bat. Then the tide turned.

The Cavs freshman pitcher settled in, striking out 10 Falcons batters and scattering 8 hits for a 9-7 Chillicothe win.

The Cavs answered Clinton Massie with a run in the home 1st inning, The Falcons tacked on two more runs in the 2nd for a 6-1 lead. Run support came for Ray in the middle of the game. Chillicothe put four runs up in the 3rd inning, added another in the 4th and scored three in the 5th to post a 9-6 lead.

Massie scored once in their final at bat but couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Maddie Ayres and Ray tallied four hits each, both combining for 4 rbi’s for Chillicothe while Massie’s Wood had a three hit day and Flanigan drove in 4 rbi’s.

Chillicothe improves to 6-0 in the SCOL and 7-2 overall. They’ll host Miami Trace Friday to start the  second round of SCOL action.

For a second straight night, the Chillicothe bats were kept quiet by an opposing pitcher.

Clinton Massie’s Ryan Collett pitched a two-hitter over six innings, slowing three walks with six strike outs.

Chillicothe’s Nolan Taylor had one trouble inning, a four-run 3rd inning, highlighted by a bases clearing triple by Zach Santoro. He allowed a walk and 6 hits. Offensively, Taylor had one of the Cavs' two hits. Caleb Price had the other.

Chillicothe hosts SCOL leader Miami Trace Friday afternoon at Ron Hansel Field.
