Chillicothe advanced to the championship game of the Adena Sectional upper bracket this Saturday with a dominating 61-26 win over Logan Elm Wednesday.
The Braves fell behind 13-2 after the fifrst period and 22-8 before cutting the Chillicothe lead to eight just before the half.
The Cavs' Osh Brown hit a three-point play to close out a 27-16 margin at the break. Up to that moment, the Braves had kept Brown in check with 3-points that came late in the first quarter.
"They surprised us with the box-and-one" said Chillicothe Coach Pat Beard "and then a triangle-and-two."
What surprised Beard most was the Braves' defensive attack was on Shawnee Smith and not Osh Brown.
After the intermission, Logan Elm's Rhianna Lucas hit a bucket to cut the Chillicothe lead to nine, but that's the closest it would be as the Cavs attacked the basket and through out some full court pressure. It created an 8-0 run by the Cavaliers over the next 95 seconds to put the number-one seed ahead 35-18.
Following a time out, the Braves' Lauryn Vanhoose dropped in a layup and Chillicothe found freshman Shawnice Smith for seven straight points. By the end of the quarter, the Cavs were up 50-23 and were settling in for Saturday plans.
Shawnice Smith led all scorers with 22 points while Shawntel Smith and Osh Brown scored 12 apiece and Shawnee added 10.
Abby Hatter tallied 14 to lead the Braves. The Cavs will face SCOL rival McClain Saturday with the winner advancing to the District Semi-final. The Tigers were 50-30 winners over Circleville on a night McClain's Taylor Polley scored her 1,000th point. Polley has been nursing an injury from soccer season.
Chillicothe won the regular season series, 44-38 at Hatton Gym and 47-33 at McClain. Airtime on NewsRadio WBEX is 12:45pm Saturday.
