A Pickaway County man fatally shot himself after a standoff with sheriff deputies Tuesday night, over a field where marijuana was found to be growing.
Pickaway County Sheriff Robert Radcliff says an illegal grow operation was discovered by air surveillance on the property of 42-year-old Timothy Sturgis on Lockbourne-Eastern Road near Ashville.
When law enforcement approached Sturgis at 6:40pm about the field, the resident was carrying an AK47 rifle and a semi automatic pistol. The standoff ensued, with Sturgis refusing orders from the sheriff deputies to put his weapons down.
At 8:17pm, Sturgis fired a single shot, mortally wounding himself. Medflight was called to the scene, but Sturgis was pronounced dead just before 9pm.
